Ambassador (Rtd.) Howard Gutman is the Managing Director of The Gutman Group, an international consulting and advisory practice, focusing on finance, trade, infrastructure, real estate, market access, energy and related strategic foreign policy issues. He serves on boards of directors in both Belgium and the U.S. and has become a Senior Advisor to a New York bond firm with European funds, a global European marketing firm, and several others. He also arranges private equity and venture capital deals among Belgians/Europeans and U.S. or Middle Eastern entities as well as helping certain Belgian businesses reach new markets. He is a frequent speaker for conferences and meetings with focus on American and foreign relations, energy, trade and the changing patterns in the world.
Ambassador (Rtd) Gutman was nominated by President Barack Obama be United States Ambassador to Belgium between 2009 and 2013 and was called ‘the most popular ambassador ever’ by a Belgian newspaper and ‘the Ambassador who made us love America again’ by a leading Belgian magazine. During Ambassador Gutman’s tenure, the favourability rating for U.S. leadership in Belgium increased 600 % and in 2012, Belgium finished first in the world with the highest increase in favourability towards U.S. leadership.
He was a former top lawyer for 27 years and was selected to numerous ‘superlawyers’ and similar attorney award lists.
